Navy pilot · Nimitz encounter, 2004

David Fravor

David Fravor is one of the most recognisable first-hand witnesses in the contemporary UAP debate. A retired United States Navy commander and former fighter pilot, he has described an encounter during a 2004 training exercise involving the USS Nimitz carrier group. His account centres on an unusual white object, often called the that he and other aviators reportedly observed above the ocean. The case has become a reference point because it involves trained military observers, a defined operational setting and discussion of sensor data. Those features make it worth studying, but they do not automatically establish the object's identity or origin.

The encounter is generally situated within a broader sequence of reports from the carrier group. Radar operators had reportedly observed unusual tracks, and aircraft were directed to investigate. Fravor has described seeing a white, elongated object manoeuvring near a disturbed patch of water. He interpreted its behaviour as unlike familiar aircraft. Later public discussion has included an infrared recording associated with the wider Nimitz episode. A careful researcher should not conflate everything said about the incident into a single continuous observation: eyewitness accounts, radar reports and later infrared footage may involve different moments and different evidence chains.
