The workers’ town
Heit el-Ghurab, south of the Giza plateau: bakeries, galleries, a hall for scribes, cattle and fish bone, excavated by Ancient Egypt Research Associates since 1988.

The town dates to the reigns of Khafre and Menkaure and shows how a pyramid workforce was housed and fed: bread and beer in bulk, meat from state herds, rotating gangs. It does not answer every engineering question about ramps and lifting. It does answer the question of who was there.
