A near miss
How a numerical reading is made: 432 squared is 186,624; light travels 186,282 miles per second. Close, and not equal. The gap is 0.18 percent.

A near miss feels like a hit because the two numbers share their first three digits. The test is to ask what would count as a miss. If 186,624 counts as the speed of light, so would any figure within a few hundred miles per second, and the space of candidate numbers is large. The mile and the second are also human units; the match vanishes in kilometres. The site uses this as the worked example for every claim of a constant found in a building.
