Number

432

A number that recurs in later readings: 432 Hz as a “natural” tuning, 432,000 as Berossus’s years and the Kali Yuga, and 432² = 186,624 as a near miss for the speed of light in miles per second.

432 = 2⁴ × 3³, which makes it divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16, 24, 27, and more. Any system that counts in 60s and 360s produces it often. There was no ancient concert pitch of 432 Hz; the hertz is a nineteenth-century unit and A = 440 Hz is a 1939 standard. Grant tunes his musical diagrams to 432 because it makes his angles and notes line up. That is a choice of coordinate, and it is stated as one in his book.
