Yuga

An age in Indian cosmology. The four ages — Satya, Treta, Dwapara, Kali — are said to cycle, with human dharma declining and returning.

Illustration made for this site. Not a photograph of the claim.

The Purāṇas and the Sūrya Siddhānta give a full cycle of 4,320,000 human years and place us in Kali Yuga from 3102 BCE. Sri Yukteswar, in The Holy Science (1894), rereads the same four names as a 24,000-year cycle tied to a solar companion and to precession, and places us in ascending Dwapara from 1699 CE. Those are two chronologies, not one.
