Reducing the Toxic Burden

This department is a course in understanding, not a clinic. Nothing here is medical advice, diagnosis, or a treatment plan. If you are ill, pregnant, feeding a child, or taking medicine, speak with a clinician who knows your case. Emergency symptoms need emergency care.

What if the liver is already the peacekeeper — and a juice is not the same fact as that work?

writes that the liver disarms and detains materials long before enzymes rise on a blood test. Physiology agrees the liver, kidneys, gut, lungs, and skin already do that work. NCCIH has not found that a cleanse empties stored metals. This chapter starts with his liver, and names both uses of the word detox in the same paragraphs.

The wider picture

The word detoxification can feature on this site, but it needs a definition. In physiology it means the work already done by the liver (phase I and phase II enzymes, glutathione, bile), the kidneys, the gut, the lungs, and the skin. In marketing it often means a short diet that is said to pull stored poisons out of tissues.

Those two uses can share a paragraph. The name on the claim is how you know which one you are in: physiology, or a marketed cleanse. NCCIH has not found that a juice empties stored metals. The liver, in and in a textbook, is already doing the work.

What William says he is doing

In he distinguishes his methods from “retreating for a month to do a juice cleanse.” The 90-Day Thyroid Rehab and the Heavy Metal Detox month are framed as additions around meals — celery juice, lemon water, the smoothie — while still eating enough, because undereating strains the adrenals. Chapter 38 then offers the nine-day 3:6:9 as a timed liver cleanse with a preparation phase. The teaching is: the liver is already a peacekeeper, and food can lighten its load. The unproven step is the claim that specific juices and seaweeds remove stored heavy metals in humans.

Three principles

Reduce unnecessary exposure to contaminants in food, water, household products, and air, with precautions that match the evidence. Nourish the body with food, essential fats, protein, fibre, hydration, and variety, so ordinary physiology has what it needs. Respect the organs that already process and eliminate substances. Suspected poisoning requires medical testing and treatment, not an assumed dietary detox.

What NCCIH says

The NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (updated March 2025) finds only a small number of studies of detoxification programmes in people, generally of low quality. A 2015 review found no compelling research to support detox diets for eliminating toxins. A 2017 review found that juicing can cause initial weight loss through low calories, then weight regain. There are no good studies of long-term effects. Severe calorie restriction, laxatives, and untreated juices carry documented harms.

How to use the word here

This department uses detoxification for the body’s own work, and for proportionate reduction of exposure. It does not use the word as a promise that a smoothie has emptied a tissue of mercury. Anyone who thinks they have been poisoned needs a clinic, not a protocol printed on a university page.

Practice

  • Start with exposures you can name: water source, cookware, food packaging, indoor sprays, smoking, alcohol, occupational dusts.
  • Support the organs you already have: sleep, water, fibre, plants, movement, and medical care when tests are indicated.
  • If you use William’s 3:6:9 or smoothie, treat them as a short, food-based experiment described in his books — and stop for medical help if you become faint, confused, or unable to eat.
